I just got the set and right away, I agree with other reviewers – the picture is great! I never thought it could look so good. I’m constantly pausing the show to enjoy the image.

The stereo sound is another matter. Right during part 2 of the opening, (“Where am I?” “In the Village.”), I hear that remastered sound “anomaly” that plagues restored movies. When the Rover bubble comes up, there’s a swooshing, swirling, muddy sound like it was played in a revolving cylinder. I noticed it again in “The Chimes Of Big Ben” when Number 6 starts putting the radio speaker into the small fridge. When I went to the mono track, the sound was back to normal. Thank you, A&E, for keeping that option! I’m sticking with mono from now on.

That swirly sound in DVD movies is most often heard during explosions. It bugs the heck out of me. If the sound engineers can’t improve a sound, why don’t they just leave it alone? I’m only running this through a home stereo, so I don’t know if a fancy 3.1 or 5.1 audio setup would correct this.

The only other quibble is why the episode theme is so much louder than the rest of the show. I love the theme music, but why the difference? (I’ve only watched “The Chimes Of Big Ben” so far).

In summary, it’s a great product. Okay, one more quibble. Why did they change the logo? I love the Prisoner typeface, so why remove the eyecatching original? To make it like the remake, I suppose. The same is true of the Mission: Impossible DVDs and the Invaders DVD sets. (I had a hard time finding The Invaders set on the shelf because the title style was so bland).

A New Yorker awakens to find himself in a place called The Village run by a man known as Two. As everyone in The Village is referred to only by a number, everyone in The Village refers to him as Six – despite he himself knowing that he has another name – and seems to know who he is. He is told he lives in The Village and that The Village is the only reality there is. Six’s mission becomes to find out where The Village is, who Two is and why he is seemingly keeping him prisoner in The Village (despite Two stating that Six is a free man), and how he can escape to his life back in New York. Here is yet another Christmas movie that leaves no stereotypical stone unturned. From the randy grandma character (“Wedding Crashers”, “The Wedding Singer” . . . seriously, why do writers NEVER get sick of this character? It’s not remotely funny anymore.) to the bonehead brothers to the father who resents his son’s success, the gang is all here. Vince Vaughn does his usual oblivious insensitive boyfriend thing and the script these cardboard cut-out characters are given to work with hits you over the head with its obvious themes of family, bonding and babies. After the “perfect” couple show off their vibrant sex life (pretending to meet at a bar as strangers and getting it on in a bathroom) and give a giant anti-kids and marriage speech, you already know that this entire movie will be devoted to quickly changing at least one of their minds about all their ideas of what happiness is supposed to be. And so Reese Witherspoon is handed a baby at practically every house, so she can suddenly start thinking “Gee, I guess I’m missing out on something with my successful relationship and career. I’d better get knocked up or I’ll never feel fulfilled as a woman!” And at every house, they get to see a couple that “really know each other,” no matter how poor or uneducated they may be, to drive home the point that the two leads don’t really know each other at all, despite being together for three years. Their favorite thing to do when they’re together is pretend to be other people, get it? They were never really themselves, and therefore their relationship is flawed. You can figure out for yourself how the rest this sap-fest movie ends.

You know what I’d love to see? Just once, a movie where a woman realizes that it’s okay to live a life without children to “fulfill” her and to start realizing instead that kids are expensive, smelly, whiny, fatigue-inducing ungrateful little germ-infested noisemakers who drain both your sanity and your wallet that you’re stuck with for the rest of your life, and then waltz off into the sunset living happily ever after while her friends sacrifice their vacations and dreams so they can sock money away into a college fund that their kid will decide not to use when they drop out after one semester to join a rock band.

But hey, that’s just me and I have weird tastes. I like movies where I can’t see every twist coming and don’t leave it feeling as if someone’s force-fed me enough sugar to put me into a diabetic coma. You may be different, and if so please enjoy every rancid moment of this pathetic holiday fruitcake.

Brad (Vaughn) and Kate (Witherspoon) are heading to Figi for Christmas so they do not have to spend time with their family. A dense fogbank grounds all flights out of San Francisco and destroys their plans. A local television report from the airport seals their fate, and soon they are off to see their families – Brad’s divorced mom and dad and Kate’s divorced mom and dad. Brad’s dad (Duvall) and brothers (Favreau and McGraw) are hell on Brad, but Kate finds amusement in his discomfort. Kate’s mom (Steenburgen) is a bit of a cougar, making things uncomfortable for everyone. By the time they have survived Brad’s mom (Spacek), their relationship is hanging by a thread. Kate’s dad is not so bad, but by then it may just be too late.

“Four Christmases” is a pretty funny holiday film. Vaughn and Witherspoon are two likeable, funny leads. A star-studded supporting cast keeps the humor coming as well. The humor is of the squirmy, uncomfortable kind. You feel bad for these two as they are forced to deal with their families. This is an entertaining film for fans of holiday movies.

I haven’t had so many laff-out-loud moments in a movie for a long time. There’s about an even mix of verbal and visual gags in this 3rd installment of the Ice Age family saga, they’re all fresh instead of hackneyed, and they all work. You wouldn’t think a film set in the age of mammoths would be able to run a parody of the old “red wire vs. blue wire” time-bomb scenario, but they find an ingenious way to do it.

Now those among you who haven’t fallen prey to creationism are well aware that mammoths are very large mammals (and hence quite recent in geological time), while the last of the dinosaurs went extinct 65,000,000 years ago. So how does the plot explain their coexistence? Well, it seems that there’s this entire hidden tropical world underneath the eponymous ice, and our heroes literally fall into it. (Don’t overthink it.)

Suddenly Manny the mammoth and his pregnant mate Ellie discover that they’re not only not the largest creatures on Earth, as they’d thot, but actually pretty petite compared to the Mama T. Rex, who in turn has to look up to Dad. It’s a classic tale of nature red in tooth and claw, except for nobody actually getting eaten. (Well, several critters are swallowed whole but subsequently disgorged, slimy with saliva but basically unhurt; family film, y’know.)

The animation is terrific. Judging from the end credits, apparently the Astor beaver trade, long thot to be extinct, has experienced a renaissance in the animated-fur factories of California. Dino babies and mammal kids are ridiculously endearing.

The 3-D is likewise terrific, well used where appropriate (especially in conveying a sense of scale for the underworld) but not overdone. The one carp I have is that 3-D simply does not lend itself to dissolves between scenes; I’m guessing the filmmakers figured this out themselves, as most of the time they used cuts.

The characters, familiar now from the 2 previous films, are well acted with distinctive personalities, and the comic-relief possums have an expanded role. New to the cast is Scratte, a long-lashed female squirrel who, in a running subplot (including mini-cartoons to both start and end the flik), vies with the iconic acorn for the undying devotion of Scrat. As a devotee of the tango, I particularly appreciated their version of it. Also new is Buck, a bold, intrepid, 1-eyed buccaneer of a weasel, voiced by Simon Pegg with British accent in full flower.

Really, it’s amazing to realize how much stuff they managed to cram into barely an hour and a half. Never a dull moment, never a missed step. Why, then, does it not get my top rating? Not at all because, as a comedy, it doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously. After all, Dogma was a comedy, and it maxed out on my rating scale. But Ice Age 3 wasn’t quite an entire story, more a collection of loosely related parts. Every one of those parts was well done, tho; indeed, I’d gladly take any of them over the entire 2.5 hours of the noxious Transformers; sadly, this much better film probably won’t do nearly as well at the box office. Too bad.

You may imagine my judgment of 9 out of 10 for this pic is a minuscule lofty, for a simple resultant without an newfangled premise. Why mesh much countertenor praise onto it? Rise I’ll bowman you. I conceive unwaveringly in rank a movie according to its music because contrary people equivalent various things! I beloved the Godfather movies but I wouldn’t phone them fun! As for the demand of lie I’ve gotta say again; KIDS show fill, jeez foreclose sensing at everything cynical and tired mature eyes! The news is as involving as it needs to be for the purposes of the wrap (i.e. estimate for our characters to get into jocular undertaking situations) as who cares nearly parcel twists & adult development when you came to a film to mortal fun with your kids or justified without as there was writer than enough here to book me – a 25year old manly with DVD accumulation filled with 15-18 rated movies – entertained for the heavy 90 mins use or fuck 20times by now on T.V. or before another movies – its shady but it is a visual gag and so isn’t that singular after you’ve seen it the foremost 3times.

What’s high about this movie is that, as I’ve already said, if you shelter’t straying your sentience of fun, can alter uncertainty / philosopher in yourself, and revalue a news that exists for the unshared usefulness of allowing the falsification of farcical situations and a plethora of seeable gags then you my quaker are in for a realistic deal.
